Training and Experience

Dr. Leavell has 25 years of experience in the mental health field. She attained a masters degree in mental health counseling from the University of Massachusetts Boston in 1999 and a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Northeastern University in 2005. She has been a licensed psychologist in Massachusetts since 2008. 

 

Dr. Leavell received specialized post-doctoral training in neuropsychology and spent 15 years in pediatric neuropsychological assessment and consultation. Prior to her neuropsychological training she spent many years as a child and adult therapist working in a variety of urban community health and mental health settings. Her approach has always been a holistic one, guided by ecological and biopsychosocial models of mental and physical wellness. 

As a graduate student, Dr. Leavell also developed an interest in mind-body medicine. She helped to create and research culturally-sensitive meditation interventions and her dissertation focused on clinician cultural bias in mind-body therapy. Throughout her career she continued to study the mind-body connection through such organizations as the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine and the Center for Mind Body Medicine. Dr. Leavell had incredible personal success treating her own pain and anxiety with these interventions. In 2021 she attained specialized training in mind-body therapy and returned to full time therapeutic work to help others attain relief. Her expertise in neurodevelopment and neuroscience a greatly inform her clinical work.
